Toscha Comeaux

An “old soul” in a young body is the way Quincy Jones describes a young person who sings as if they have a lifetimes worth of experience. It is this description that defines a singer that makes every song they sing meaningful.Toscha embodied this description from an early age and continues to encompass this type of spirit still today. To categorize Toscha Comeaux’s style would simply limit her gift, because the genre of music in which she exemplifies, holds no boundaries.

As with many singers,Toscha,a native of Hartford,Connecticut, got her beginning performance experiences in the church at the age of 4.In elementary school, singing with friends in school assemblies, talent shows and performing in plays was a regular occurrence for this young lady. When she entered high school, she passed an audition and became one of the first students to attend the new school The Greater Hartford Academy of the Performing Arts. This would be the place where Ms.Comeaux would be introduced to “Classical” vocal training.During her high school years, she cultivated her talents in the classroom which was lead by brilliant instructors. She performed any chance she could and then had the opportunity to sing in the chorus and given a solo in The Connecticut Opera’s(in conjunction with Syracuse and Buffalo Opera) production of “Porgy and Bess” and also as an extra in “Rigoletto” which were her first experiences with performing in a major professional setting.Whether singing with a band at the age of 15,being asked and accepting the honor to sing at Southern State College’s commencement ceremony held at Yale University, weddings, funerals, talent shows and in a neighborhood studio, became ways Toscha would earn money.

College would be the next step in Toscha’s musical career when she received a scholarship to attend Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach,Florida. To her surprise, the word came after an impromptu audition during the Bethune-Cookman Universities’ concert that was being held at a local church. While her matriculation at Bethune,Toscha continued her studies in voice singing “Classical”,Jazz(her first love),R&B,Gospel and anything else that moved her.Being a part of the Bethune-Cookman University Concert Chorale and other school vocal groups allowed her to travel throughout the states and gave her yet another platform and a plethora of experience to hone in and mold her craft.Toscha continued to participate in various vocal competitions throughout this period. One competition that sticks out in her mind, was the Central Florida Regional MET auditions. She didn’t win or place in the competition but walked away with knowledge and positive critiquing from the judges.Knowledge is power!

Today,Ms.Comeaux is still at it! She has performed at Disney World(Animal Kingdom) as a principal singer in The Festival of the Lion King show;Iceland;Jazz tour throughout England;Performed as a lead singer in Cirque Du Soleil’s “Viva Elvis”(Las Vegas,Nevada), and continues to perform locally as well throughout the states and abroad.
